Memorable Team-mates:
There have been so many great team-mates that I would not want to
exclude anyone from this group.
How did you come to play for the Gaels?
I grew up playing in the Whitby minor lacrosse system playing under
Jim Bishop and Marty Gallas. After finishing minor lacrosse I went to
the Gaels.
What was your first game with the Gaels like? What impressions did
you get? How old were you?
I loved playing my first game with the Gaels. It was a home game and
there was much more excitement than I had anticipated due to the fact
that I had grown up in Bowmanville and a lot of my friends and family
were in the stands. I had been called up during my midget years to
play a few games. However, my most memorable was the first game when
had come out of midget for my first season with the Gaels.
What memorable moments do you have as a Gael?
Winning the national championship (Founder’s Cup). To this day it is
one of the best moments of my life. There has not been (nor will there
be) a better feeling in sports then the one that I experienced when
winning a national championship. I was hard earned over many years
with a great group of team-mates.
What did you do after playing for the Gaels? Did being a part of
the Gaels organisation leave any lasting impressions?
I moved on to playing with the Whitby Warriors Junior A Lacrosse Club,
which I enjoyed tremendously. I loved playing with the Gaels…I loved
playing for the Green Gaels. From management, to coaches, to players,
I was treated wonderfully and enjoyed every minute of playing for this
team.
What are you up to now?
I recently finished my fifth year of University and am now a teacher
with the Durham District School Board.
Are you still actively involved in lacrosse in one form or another?
Unfortunately no. I still attend the odd Gaels and Warriors game, but
I have found other things to keep me busy. However, I do miss the game
tremendously.
What do you think of the recent resurgence in the popularity of
lacrosse?
I think it is terrific. I feel as though through playing under Jim
Bishop I was a part of the resurgence in this area. We had highly
successful teams and seeing the stands full for playoff games was
wonderful to be a part. As well, having the Gaels in Clarington has
allowed a new community to become exposed to the game of Lacrosse and
they seem to have embraced the team as well as the sport.
Lacrosse has taught me so many life skills such as dedication, hard
work and commitment. I only hope that other kids can learn as much
from the game as I did.
The NLL is also enjoying some success and I only hope that it can
continue to grow and become even more successful in the future.
Hopefully more and more people will continue to become involved in
lacrosse as I believe it is the best kept secret in all of sports.
Thanks for sharing this Brett and thanks for the picture above.
We wish you luck in all your future endeavours. And who knows, I
might bump into you at a game one of these days!
